The 21 short stories of Big Alley and Backstreets | El Callejón reflect the dialed-back pace of small towns and remote communities along the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, taking the reader to spaces of conversation and discovery. El Callejón, the crooked narrow main street running north-south, is subject, object, and metaphor for the divide between hinterland hoods and the global convening power of wind, waves, sun, and surf. Offerings proliferate on Callejón de la Loma, but the real catch is the main street above it, where the socioeconomic level shifts upward but the larger context does not. Personalities along the big alley and backstreets embody struggle and vulnerability but also resilience and resourcefulness. They share protagonism with tígueres of macho entitlement and children living life out loud in the rough-and-tumble immediacy of whatever is on hand. With a keen eye for detail, the author depicts the constant open intimacy of neighborly relations and shared lives of a shared neighborhood.

Los 21 relatos de El Callejón reflejan el ritmo más pausado de los pequeños pueblos y comunidades remotas a lo largo de la costa norte de la República Dominicana, llevando al lector a espacios de conversación y descubrimiento. El Callejón, la sinuosa y estrecha calle principal que discurre de norte a sur, es sujeto, objeto y metáfora de la división entre los barrios del interior y el poder de convocatoria global del viento, las olas, el sol y el surf. Las ofertas proliferan en el Callejón de la Loma, pero lo realmente interesante es la calle principal de más arriba, donde el nivel socioeconómico sube, pero el contexto general no deja de ser el mismo. Las personalidades a lo largo de El Callejón y sus callejuelas encarnan la lucha y la vulnerabilidad, así como la resiliencia y el ingenio. Comparten protagonismo con tígueres sabelotodo y niños que viven su vida a voz en grito en la inmediatez de lo que tienen a su alcance. Con atención meticulosa al detalle, la autora describe la constante intimidad abierta de las relaciones entre vecinos y a la vida compartida del barrio.
